A thought on the coverage of the launch today
Thought it was way over the top and had a handing out participation trophies feel. Today the US accomplished a feat that we accomplished 50+ years ago. The entire mission is something the Russians have been doing regularly for a decade. So, all the oh my god how amazing seemed out of place. The worst was the "you will always remember where you were" bit.
I'm glad we're reasserting ourselves back into space, I'm glad we've engaged the private sector more and I'm glad there is a vision in place that this is a key part of. But let's keep in perspective that what happened today was not a major accomplishment, it's been done, repeatedly. If anything we should be quietly acknowledging this as the step in the vision it is and be somewhat embarrassed that we allowed the Russians to own this capability for a decade.
